Old Mac Daddy: The Gem of the Elgin Valley

Welcome to Old Mac Daddy – inspired by nature with a touch of glam! While relishing your childhood nostalgia of camping trips and forest adventures, you can sit back and enjoy the added luxury that comes with staying in a designer trailer suite. Nestled in the heart of the Elgin Valley, this is the perfect getaway to snap you out of your comfort zone and get in touch with nature.

The famous trailers speak for themselves and there are ten to choose from. Each one is kitted out in theme and sets the scene for a rather interesting stay. Trust us when we say there is something for everyone. Our favourites include the ethereal The Dream, the loved-up Mills & Boon, and Mexican mash-up Dirkie Sanchez. So, indulge your eccentric side as you’re transported to an alternate universe for a few nights.

Each trailer suite features a double room (the trailer), en-suite bathroom, separate lounge, minibar, coffee station and viewing deck. This makes for an ideal couples’ getaway, or, if the kids are tagging along, the lounge can double up as a kid’s room.

If you’re bringing a few extra guests, you’ll want to book Daddy’s Villa or the School House. Each villa sleeps up to six adults and boasts a mini kitchen, cosy fireplace, coffee station and minibar – what more do you need!

If you’re keen to keep it rustic, there are three private tented camps to rest your weary head after a day of activities. Don’t be fooled by the tents though; you still get the trimmings of a minibar, coffee station and eco-friendly amenities to give you that elevated glamping experience.

Daddy’s Hideaway is perched above the Elgin Valley with breathtaking views to enjoy with your morning coffee, or from your private plunge pool on the deck. Did we mention the stargazing from here is something out of this world?

Big Daddy’s Den, on the other hand, is geared for the ultimate outdoor camping experience and perfect for larger families. The best part? It has an exclusive wood-fired hot tub for those chilly days!

All guests staying over can enjoy complimentary breakfast daily in The Barn. Old Mac Daddy welcomes day visitors to feast on wholesome, freshly-prepared dishes from wood-fired pizzas to surf-and-turf platters and scrumptious salads.

Old Mac Daddy has such a magical feel to it that many a bride and groom have had their dream wedding here. On that note, it’s a pretty great honeymoon spot too!

If activity is what you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. The mountain and lake provide the perfect backdrop to a host of activities, including archery, mountain biking, kayaking and fishing.

old mac daddy

If you’re after a bit of rest and relaxation (why else would you be here?) book a treatment at their very own onsite spa, Zen Den. What could be more relaxing than a pampering massage in nature!

Anyone staying for a few days will find the Elgin Valley well worth exploring and there’s plenty to do in the area. The Railroad Market is the perfect brunch spot, while wine enthusiasts can enjoy the blends at Paul Cluver, Charles Fox, Iona and South Hill Vineyards, to name a few. Thrill-seekers will love Cape Canopy Tours’ full moon ziplining experience through the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve, and during the day there are some beautiful hiking trails to conquer.

Ready for your relaxing Elgin getaway? You’ll be so wrapped up in the peaceful surroundings, you’ll be clinging to the sun lounger as you leave.

25 Of the Best Holiday Resorts in South Africa

[Updated January 2021]

In seeking out the best holiday resorts in South Africa, a common thread emerges. These destinations cater to every sun-seeker … which means swimming pools, activities for the whole family, games rooms, playgrounds, and a restaurant or two on-site are the universal features. They’re the kind of holiday resorts that give you that salty, sandy, suntan lotion scented feeling of being on leave.

Like a warm fuzziness, mixed with some nostalgia, these are the kind of places where the biggest decision of the day is whether to base yourself around the pool or the activities area. They’re the kind of places where a fleeting holiday romance is as common as forming lifelong friendships; well-rounded holiday hubs where the focus is on family-friendly entertainment and quality time well-spent. After all… isn’t life better in flip flops?
