TORONTO – A jolt of excitement shot through Toronto Maple Leafs headquarters Tuesday as Auston Matthews joined team practice for the first time since training camp opened.

Still recovering from August’s wrist surgery, the reigning Rocket Richard champ had been skating regularly on his own, toiling away in the gym and, since Friday, handling pucks on an empty sheet.

But the centre’s debut in rush, backchecking and shooting drills was a welcome sight.

“You always feel a little bit left out when you’re not with the group and injured,” Jason Spezza explained. “It’s a tough feeling as an athlete, so the sooner we get him back into the mix — even if he’s not full participant but just part of the group — I think will help him.

“He takes the game very seriously. He spends a lot of time on his craft. He’s always working on different things. You can tell he’s come with some things that he’s been focusing on here through the summer, and he looks great off the ice, and we’re excited to see him on the ice.”

Matthews left the hour-long morning practice early, after about 25 minutes of work, enough time to slip more than a couple pucks past Jack Campbell.

“Yeah, I love that. He’s that player that he is, and he’s that leader in our group too, so it’s always great to have him back on the ice,” Rasmus Sandin beamed.

“Even though he wasn’t on the whole practice, he looked really good. I never get surprised with how many goals he scores during practice, even though this was his first practice with the team.”

Spezza notes that off-season injuries are easier on players because they don’t feel as much urgency to rush recovery and jump back into action.

To that end, the organization isn’t placing a definitive timeline on its superstar’s return.

The Maple Leafs are “very confident” their MVP is on track to dress Opening Night, Oct. 13, and have not ruled out squeezing him into an exhibition game next week. That would be a bonus.

For now, the sniper is avoiding contact drills and ramping toward taking faceoffs and putting his usual torque on his wristers.

Matthews, 24, will enter 2021-22 hot off consecutive 40-goal campaigns and, if healthy, should topple Rick Vaive’s franchise record for most goals in a single season (54).

He has set personal goals for himself — 50? 60? — that choses to keep private.

Nothing would shock Matthews’ teammates, who watched him rip 41 in 52 games last winter despite a nagging bone bruise in his wrist that hindered his greatest weapon.

No big deal. Matthews found a way to beat goalies on rebounds, tips and dekes instead.

“He didn’t play many games where he was feeling 100 per cent and yet still was incredible,” coach Sheldon Keefe said.

“It’s exciting to know that he’s going to be feeling better when he gets back on the ice and playing for real again.”

“What’s really impressive, especially battling the injury last year, is his ability to adapt his game. Obviously, he has such a unique shot and release,” Maple Leafs captain John Tavares said.

“But his ability to adjust and adapt when that’s not always going to be available to him [and] find ways to produce in different ways is such a key factor why he’s just so consistent and so dangerous.”

Spezza believes Matthews, who posted a career-best plus-21 rating, reached another level in terms of his defensive commitment and competitiveness last season.

Still, there is a higher tier for the Hart Trophy runner-up to hit.

“The sky’s the limit for Auston. I think he’s a guy that can be the best player in the game. He’s dominant both sides of the puck. He does a lot of great things even when he doesn’t score goals, and I think that’s something that gets lost a little bit,” Spezza said.

“How well he tracks pucks, how hard he is to play against, how good he is when we have a lead. And he’s just a big man that covers a lot ice, so he does a lot of great things.”

Jalen Smereck, the Black hockey player who was subjected to a racist gesture during a Ukrainian Hockey League game on Sunday, has announced he is taking a personal leave of absence.

“These situations are very tough and I am a big believer in standing up for what is right,” Smereck wrote on Instagram Tuesday. “I have been putting a lot of thought into what comes next for me in my career but as of right now I have decided that I will be taking a personal leave of absence from HC Donbass and I will not play another game in the [Ukrainian Hockey League] until Andrey Denyskin is suspended and removed from the league. Thank you.”

The incident occurred in the second period of Sunday’s game between HC Donbass, who Smereck plays for, and Denyskin’s club, HC Kremenchuk. During a stoppage in play, Denyskin shouted at Smereck and then mimed unpeeling a banana and eating it. He was ejected from the game for doing so.

Denyskin later addressed the incident on Instagram, saying it was “a gesture that someone can consider as an insult in race” that he made after his emotions got the best of him. Denyskin went on to claim he respects “all people regardless of race or nationality.” Denyskin has since deleted the post.

“I definitely think he should be done for the year,” Smereck told Ken Campbell in an interview for Hockey Unfiltered. “For me, I would think his career is pretty much over…[he should be] suspended for this year [from the league] and get a suspension for the rest of his career from Team Ukraine. There’s no way to apologize for that. And even the apology he gave was really bad.”

The IIHF condemned Denyskin’s racist gesture on Monday, calling his actions “a direct assault on the ideals and values of our game” while committing to investigate the incident further.

“There is no place for such a blatantly racist and unsportsmanlike gesture in our sport and in society,” Luc Tardif, president of the IIHF, said in a statement. “We will ensure that all necessary ethics violation investigations occur to ensure that this behaviour is sanctioned appropriately.”

The UHL expressed similar sentiments, labelling Denyskin’s behaviour “unacceptable within the framework of a civilized society” and said disciplinary proceedings would be opened against him.

It remains unclear at this time what type of punishment Denyskin might receive.

Prominent players from around the hockey world weighed in after a video of the incident surfaced on social media, expressing their disdain for the act and urging governing bodies to deliver appropriate consequences for Denyskin’s actions.

“Am I surprised? No. This is still a huge issue in this game,” Anthony Duclair, who plays for the Florida Panthers, wrote on Twitter. “Can’t wait to hear this punishment, a lot on the line for the future of this game.”

Mathieu Joseph, a forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning, shared Duclair’s perspective, saying on Twitter that Denyskin shouldn’t be allowed or given “a chance to play hockey ever again. I am beyond disgusted. Hurts to watch. I cannot wait to hear the suspension.”

“Yeah, I saw it,” Morgan Rielly, who was part of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ player-driven initiative to wear Black Lives Matter T-shirts during media availabilities in July 2020, said on Monday. “It was a horrible act. It was disgusting. I mean, there’s no place for that in our sport, but especially just in our society. In terms of what should be done about it, I don’t know. But I think there has to be action. And I think it’s just a sign that there’s more work to be done.”

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka faces up to three months on the sidelines with a knee injury sustained during Sunday’s north London derby win over Tottenham.

Xhaka was accidentally caught by Lucas Moura after the Tottenham forward had been challenged by Thomas Partey. Medical assessments have confirmed “a significant injury to his medial knee ligament” but surgery is not required, Arsenal said in a statement.

“Granit’s recovery and rehabilitation program will start immediately and we are aiming for him to be back in action in approximately three months,” Arsenal said. “Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Granit to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Sunday was Xhaka’s first game back following a three-match ban for a red card in the 5-0 loss to Manchester City in August.

The injury also sees Xhaka miss the last two international breaks of the calendar year, with Switzerland losing its captain for World Cup qualifiers.

As well as being suspended for Arsenal’s last three games, Xhaka had to isolate at the start of the month after testing positive for the coronavirus.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian soccer great Pele is expected to leave the hospital after getting treatment for almost one month, his daughter Kely Nascimento said Wednesday.

The 80-year-old Pele removed a tumor from his colon on Sept. 4 and spent days in intensive care after the surgery.

“Now that he’s stronger and leaving the hospital to continue recovering and treating himself at home,” Kely Nascimento said on Instagram, adding she will return to the United States, where she lives. “(Thank you) for all the affection and love we received from you this month!”

Hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo did not confirm the soccer great is expected to leave soon.

Pele published several pictures and videos on social media showing him recovering in the hospital. The tumor was found when he went for routine exams at the end of August.

Pele won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, and remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals in 92 matches.
